Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon said the recent decriminalization of same-gender, adult, consensual sodomy in the state (done to comply with 2003 case law - Lawrence v. Texas) renders moot the appeal by the Department of Social Services (DSS) of a Jackson County Court's decision to overturn a departmental ban on gay and lesbian foster parents.
Nixon's decision is based on the claim by DSS that potential foster parent Lisa Johnston was in violation of this (unconstitutional) law. But even after the announcement of Nixon's decision to drop the appeal--which will allow Johnston and her partner, Dawn Roginksi, to resume the foster parent licensing process--spokespersons for both the DSS and Governor Matt Blunt said the appeal process should continue

In other happy news,
The Senate voted 49 to 48 to defeat the Federal Marriage Amendment, a measure that would have denied marriage to same-sex couples and seriously threatened civil unions and domestic partnerships. Seven Republicans joined 41 Democrats in voting down the measure, which opponents said was a politically motivated distraction from real challenges facing the country.
The quarter of a million postcards delivered on behalf of Human Rights Campaign members made the strength of opposition known on Capitol Hill.
The procedural vote, known as cloture, needed 60 votes to pass and received 49 votes today. By defeating cloture, the vote killed the amendment. Had it passed cloture, the amendment would have needed 67 votes to pass the Senate.
All four Senators from Kansas and Missouri voted to make gays and lesbians second-class citizens by saying "yea" to the FMA. Call, or email your Senators to let them know what you think about that.

Tuesday, June 13 at 7pm Many people have experienced “spiritual abuse” or abandonment by mainstream religion. As an alternative to church, Nourishment for the Soul is offering a spiritual encounter group for individuals who want to grow their faith or discover their “spiritual orientation.”
Each group shall consist of eight to ten individuals who meet regularly to share inspirational thoughts and experiences, to find and lend support, and to grow in their relationship with themselves and the universe as they make their way on their spiritual journeys. An informal format will be used for open sharing and active participation.

Wednesday, June 28 at 7pm Women’s and Men’s Q-Dating As an alternative to bar and internet venues, LGCC- KC offers Q-dating parties geared toward introducing people to each other in a fun, game-show-like atmosphere. Q-Dating is a safe and sophisticated way to meet people without obligation or apprehension while having loads of fun at the same time! LGCC creates a casual atmosphere giving participants a chance to meet up to 15 singles in one evening for only $15.00 Events are age and occasionally interest specific. During “Q-Dating” events participants get a chance to briefly meet and talk to each other before going on to an actual date. After 3-5 minutes participants are signaled by the event host to move from table to table meeting “potential dates” face-to-face. After allotted time, each participant circles a “Yes, interesting” or “no, way, not in this life” on a match card. If both participants circle “yes” after their Q- Date” they are considered a match.

M.E.N. - The Men's Enrichment Network is a group of men 18 & older in the Greater Kansas City area who are comfortable in a group which is accepting of other men of all sexualities. We meet to enrich our lives thru the sharing of ideas and experiences which can lead to more fulfilling lives. Visit their website, the link is in the show notes, for more info. The Men's Enrichment Network meets every Sunday from 6:30 - 8:00 PM at the Cathedral located 13th & Broadway.

The Women's Support Group, will meet on the first Saturday of each month from 10:00 AM - noon at LGCC. This support and educational group is for women who are feeling the bind of being married and either coming out or questioning their sexual orientation. The Transsexual Support Group meets on the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month at Spirit of Hope

Howard Dean Once Again Infuriates LGBT Groups
Not only has Democratic National Committee Chair Howard Dean eliminated the party's lesbian and gay outreach director post, and fired its gay outreach adviser, on May 10 he appeared on Pat Robertson's "700 Club," and misstated the DNC's position on same-sex marriage. According to the Washington Blade, Dean claimed the DNC platform states "marriage is between a man and a woman." The official plank is inclusive, saying, "We support full inclusion of gay and lesbian families in the life of our nation and seek equal responsibilities, benefits, and protections for these families." Gay rights advocates were justifiably outraged.

Illinois Extends Benefits to Domestic Partners
On May 8, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich signed an executive order that extends domestic partner benefits to state employees; this extension includes lesbian and gay couples. With this move, the Prairie State becomes the thirteenth state to extend DP benefits to all state workers, joining California, Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington, as well as the District of Columbia.

CDC to Recommend Routine HIV Testing
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is expected to issue guidelines sometime this summer that will call for HIV testing for all teens and adults--aged 13 to 65 years--during their routine health examinations. CDC decision-makers claim around 250,000 Americans are unaware that they are HIV-positive. There is concern that the proposed recommendations do not include adequate counseling and informed consent. Knowing one's HIV status is an important health datum, but until the government can ensure nondiscrimination for those testing positive, its plan falls short of perfection.

LGBT Hate Crimes Amendment Withdrawn
An amendment to a Senate bill, that would have added gays and lesbians to federal hate crimes legislation, was dropped after Republicans threatened to block the sex offender registry bill to which it was attached. Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MASS) promised to reintroduce the provision in the future.

Thursday, May 18, from 6-8pm is a Starbucks Coffee Tasting to support The Kansas City Anti-Violence Project provides information, support, referrals, advocacy and other services to LGBT victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and bias crimes. KCAVP also educates the community at large through training and outreach programs. KCAVP is the only LGBT-specific domestic violence or sexual assault service in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, or Iowa .

Sunday, May 21 at noon the Midwest Alternative Families Alliance is holding a gay and lesbian family picnic. It will be at the Shawnee Mission Park, Shelter 6 at noon. Plan to bring your children, your partner, and a dish to share. This picnic is for families who are interested in fostering, adopting, artificially inseminating or already have children but want to connect with other gay and lesbian families.

The National Gay and Lesbian task force is bringing Creating Change, the largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender organizing conference in the nation to Kansas City and it will be held November 8-12. They have announced the release their Request for Proposed Presentations/Workshops, download this document which includes proposal submission and conference information from CreatingChange.org and consider presenting a workshop since presenters will receive a steeply discounted registration fee.

Gay Pride has announced the performers that will be at this year’s celebration. This years performers will be: Eric Himan, Kim English, En Vogue and, the worlds best known drag queen who is fond of saying, when asked how tall she is, “Honey, with hair, heels and attitude, I’m through the DAMN roof!” You guessed it, Ru Paul!! She will be the main headliner and will be appearing Sunday night at Pride.

I am sorry for the delay in posting this podcast but I was working all week on a project that has been donated to Kansas City Gay Pride and will be auctioned off to the highest bidder in a charity auction to be held at Bar Natasha on May 26 at 7pm. I designed and created a Swarvski crystal necklace, bacelet and earring set. These three items, in addition to a framed collage of 3 photographs of San Francisco donated by John Ong and 2 posters created and donated by Thomas and Evan of Shut That Bitch Up will be up for bid. The best part of deal is that, in return, we will all get a booth together at Kansas City Gay Pride. That is right, you will be able to come meet all four of your Kansas City Gay Podcasters at Gay Pride this year. If you do come out and say hi, you might just make it on to one or more of our podcasts since we will, undoubtedly, be doing some recording. In addition, we will probably have T-shirts, paintings, photography, jewelry, posters, and other items for sale as each of us is, by nature, very creative. Now, due to the fact that I was so busy this week working on my project and the fact that this show has been so delayed, today’s show will be very short. Next week, I will return with a full show with all the bells and whistles.

Take Action
Congress will vote on the discriminatory Federal Marriage Amendment as early as June. Your members of Congress need to hear from you, NOW! We need everyone to join in the fight! Go to HRC.org/VoteNo and sign the Million for Marriage Petition, then please spread the word to as many friends, family and online mailing lists as you can! When you fill out the petition and click Sign Now, a postcard with your name and address will automatically print out at the Human Rights Campaign headquarters. The HRC staff will hand-deliver each postcard to congressional offices on June 5 — the week of the Senate vote. Also make sure that you check the box to sign up for HRC's online Action Network so they can keep you informed about next steps to fight the discriminatory amendment. Again, I cannot stress how important this is, we are talking about a FEDERAL law that would ban gay marriage. When you are notifying the people you know, please don’t forget your straight allies. Their support will be critical to defeating this amendment.

Wednesday, April 26 The Day of Silence is a student-led day of action designed to draw attention to the discrimination and - in effect, the silencing - experienced by LGBT students and their allies. In the Kansas City area, over 500 students from over two dozen high schools and colleges will be spending the day not speaking to draw attention to these unheard voices. At the end of the day, supporters of LGBT equality are welcome to attend the Breaking the Silence Rally and Celebration. The rally will be at the JC Nichols Fountain at 47th and Broadway from 5-6 PM. After the rally, from 7- 10 PM we will be hosting a Breaking the Silence Celebration at the Spirit of Hope Metropolitan Community Church at 3801 Wyandotte. This event will feature radical cheerleaders, Rah Booty; musical performances by Reach, Jen Lawless and Lori Brune, One Million Tiny Tiny Jesuses, and Bent Left; a community resource fair; and more! Thursday, April 27, 2006 7-9 PM Estate Planning for Unmarried and Same-Sex Couples is taking place at LGCC. Unmarried and same-sex couples lack the same concrete tax, inheritance and employment benefits that marriage bestows, these benefits must be created through the use of estate planning documents and contracts. Heather Counts, a tax and estate planning attorney will teach you the basics of estate planning, with special consideration given to planning techniques and issues applicable to unmarried and same-sex couples. The Women's Support Group, led by Elaine Meizlich, will meet on the second Saturday of April, rather than the first. This will only be the case in April; the group will return to the first Saturday in May. Elaine Meizlish is collaborating with the LGCCKC to host a NEW support group for women who are married, separated, or divorced and coming out. Elaine is a clinical social worker, who has expertise and experience in helping women explore and deal with the issues of being married and coming out. This monthly support and educational group is for women who are feeling the bind of being married and either coming out or questioning their sexual orientation. The group typically meets the first Saturday of each month from 10:00 AM - noon at the LGCC. To register, please call Elaine Meizlish at 913-677- 5255 or the Center at 816-931-4420.

Bunny Bowl Fundraiser on Saturday, April 8 at noon to Benefit KCAVP and IGBO
Will be held at Ward Parkway Lanes, 1523 W. 89th Street, Kansas City, MO; Cost: $20 per person and you don’t need a team. Bring your friends! Join the KCAVP and the International Gay Bowling Organization (IGBO) 2006 Bowling Committee as we host the Bunny Bowl. Bowl four games and throw out the low score. Throw a strike hitting a specially marked pin and you will have your name entered for a special drawing. A 50/50 raffle will also be held (half of the raffle proceeds to you and half to the charities).

The next Kansas City Gay Pride board meeting, which is open to the public, will be on Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at 7:00 PM at the LGCC-KC, 207 Westport Road, Kansas City, MO.

The Human Rights Campaign is sponsoring a panel discussion on Wednesday April 12th from 7:30-10:00 PM The topic is: Introduction to Transgender Issues: What does it mean? An evening of discussion on issues surrounding gender identity and expression - 3 Transgender Speakers, 1 Attorney, Personal Stories, Legal Implications, Local and National Issues. Donna Rose, guest speaker, is a postoperative transsexual woman. Today she is a well-known educator, author, advocate, and spokesperson of a condition steeped in misconception, prejudice, and ignorance. Move On .org has created a petition to censure President Bush
On Monday March 13, 2006 Senator Russ Feingold introduced a resolution to censure President Bush for breaking the law by illegally wiretapping American citizens.
Censuring the president is a reasonable first step in condemning the president's actions. Now it's up to us to show broad public support for Senator Feingold's resolution. Sign the petition asking Congress to join the call for censure. As of this reading, they have had 413,880 people sign this petition which is 82% of their goal of 500,000 signatures!

The Lesbian Gay Community Center is located at 207 Westport Road and is open 6-9 Monday through Friday. To volunteer, you must attend a Volunteer Training. We are pleased to announce that the Kansas City, Missouri, Health Department will once again be working on a survey with LGCC-KC so we can now "Check the Pulse."
The Pulse was the second LGBT community health assessment ever done. By doing the survey again in 2006, we will be able to see where the community has made health improvements and where we still face challenges.
For this, we need your help. The first meeting of the Outreach Committee, the people who will actually help us get surveys taken by people, will be held soon. Stay tuned for more details!
Here are a few exciting facts about The Pulse:
The largest comprehensive community health sample of lesbians ever surveyed.
The largest comprehensive community health sample of transgendered individuals ever surveyed. (12)
The community has had 3 articles published nationally (and a fourth one on the way) using the data from The Pulse.

Kansas City is organizing a team for the Gay Games VII to be held July 15-22 in Chicago. There are dozens of sports and events in which you can compete.
Take a quick minute and register yourself on the site with the sports you plan on competing in as well as a little bio/contact info. There is a discussion board for travel, general sports talk and other things. The site also has upcoming events and a Gay Games recap that will be updated as decisions are made. If you're not going to the games, register anyway as the site will help connect people looking to start new teams locally or funnel interested people to established teams.
